Title: Ranjish Hi Sahi – رنجش ہی سہی – If Anguish Is My Fate, Then So Be It
Language: Urdu
Lyrics: Ahmad Faraz, Talib Baghpati
Why did we part, people will ask – who all will we explain ourselves to?
Why did we part, people will ask – who all will we explain ourselves to?
tu mujh se khafa hai to zamaane ke liye aa
Granted that you are displeased with me, but still
Come to me, if only to silence the world’s questions
ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa
If anguish is my fate, then so be it
Come to me, if only to cause me further anguish
ranjish hi sahi
If anguish is my fate, then so be it
aa phir se mujhe chhoṛ ke jaane ke liye aa
Come to me, if only to desert me yet again
ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa
If anguish is my fate, then so be it
Come to me, if only to cause me further anguish
ranjish hi sahi
If anguish is my fate, then so be it
aa phir se mujhe chhoṛ ke jaane ke liye aa
Come to me, if only to desert me yet again
ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa
If anguish is my fate, then so be it
Come to me, if only to cause me further anguish
ranjish hi sahi
pahle se maraasim nah sahi phir bhi kabhi to
Granted that we no longer stand on the same intimate terms as before, but
pahle se maraasim nah sahi phir bhi kabhi to
Granted that we no longer stand on the same intimate terms as before, but
rasm-o rah-i duniya hi nibhaane ke liye aa
Society dictates that even distant acquaintances merit civility, so
Come to me, at least sometime, if only for the sake of civility
ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa
If anguish is my fate, then so be it
Come to me, if only to cause me further anguish
ranjish hi sahi
If anguish is my fate, then so be it
maana kih muhabbat ka chhupaana hai muhabbat
Granted that being in love involves concealing that love, but
maana kih muhabbat ka chhupaana hai muhabbat
Granted that being in love involves concealing that love, but
chupke se kisi roz jataane ke liye aa
Come to me, someday secretly, and proclaim your love to me
ranjish hi sahi
If anguish is my fate, then so be it
aa phir se mujhe chhoṛ ke jaane ke liye aa
Come to me, if only to desert me yet again
ranjish hi sahi dil hi dukhaane ke liye aa
If anguish is my fate, then so be it
Come to me, if only to cause me further anguish
ranjish hi sahi
If anguish is my fate, then so be it

Jaffer Zaidi masterfully carves out a spectrum of rich textures and emotive musical passages. Ali Sethi takes on this classic masterfully, his voice overflowing with the melancholy of heartbreak and the ache of longing. The minimalist, captivating arrangement speaks volumes of the vision that Jaffer Zaidi has as a music director. He creates an intimate environment of solitude that serves as the perfect backdrop for Sethi’s take on a forsaken beau. The song, intimate by design, carries the weight of an abandoned lover that resonates throughout this fitting tribute to the legendary Mehdi Hassan.
