    Dost – Abida Parveen

Renowned Abida Parveen graces the Coke Studio platform once again in episode 3 with a track entitled Dost. Celebrated for her Sufi works, this Coke Studio composition brings forth Abida in an element that is both rare and unique. Unlike her repertoire, ‘Dost’ is structured as an Arifana ghazal but in essence is a kalaam written by Hazrat Baba Zaheen Shah Taji (RA). The kalaam dismisses the previously romanticized pain and suffering of the transient world. The lyrics explores the borderline pain and ecstasy of being fully consumed for the Divine Beloved, as all the friendships and enmities of the fleeting realm hold no purpose and are of no consequence.

This minimalist and subtle composition allows the maestro to connect with the lyrical content leaving one overwhelmed and in awe. The percussions in comparison provide the shifting, cyclical rhythms that reinforce the composition, shadowed by Shallum’s acoustic musings that provide the tenderness to mirror Abida’s heart-wrenching rendition.

The composition induces a highly emotional response in the individual that transcends language and cultural barriers.
