As the curtains go up on Rizwan-Muazzam: the mood is majestic, while they symbolically sit cross legged on a ‘takht’, the brothers deep crooning voice washes over the room as they launch into the epileptic rhythms, and one is swept away as time and memory transcend and these two own their family ritual of Qawwali ever so gracefully for the duration of the performance.
The balance between keeping centuries old tradition alive and engaging with the changing times has found its natural meeting ground in ‘kalaams’ produced by the duo. Exhibiting years of training and rehearsals under the adept gaze of their father, Late Mujahid Muabarak Ali Khan, and their uncle the Late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, from whom they learnt to adapt the ‘ishq’ for the medium, Rizwan-Muazzam are the rightful torchbearers.
Signed with Peter Gabriel’s Real World record label, and having collaborated with musicians of repute such as Nitin Sawhney and Medieval Punditz, their forte for the genre stretches beyond the musical sphere.
In another predictable exhilarating performance, the duo: Rizwan-Muazzam return to Coke Studio, Season 8, in their third appearance on the show with a performance that will leave you at ease and ignite your spirit, unlike ever before.
